Following the Board’s decision at the December board meeting to retire the use of our current mascot at the end of the year, we have been working to develop a process and timeline to select our new mascot for the 2017-2018 school year and beyond. I want to give you an update on the process and what to expect going forward.
First, we developed a survey for the entire community to suggest mascot ideas. The survey was sent through email to all parents/students, it was plastered on social media (and shared literally hundreds of times), was covered by both local newspapers, and was a topic of conversation throughout town. We received over 1,000 suggestions! After weeding out the inappropriate selections and combining the common ideas, we were left with the attached document that shows the most commonly suggested mascots.
At the same time, I solicited applications for high school students to serve on the student mascot committee. After reviewing the applications, we have created a group of roughly 25 students to help guide the process.
On Monday, Mr. Noskey and I met with the committee and narrowed the attached list down to a top 10. The top 10 names are: Belding Bison, Belding Bandits, Belding Bruins, Belding Buccaneers, Belding Black Bears, Belding Black Hawks, Belding Black Knights, Belding Bengals, Belding Pride, and Belding Lumberjacks.
Beginning today, we are asking alumni, community members, students, and staff to share their top three choices via the survey linked below:
The survey will close on Monday, February 6, 2017, at 11:59pm. If you would like to complete the survey on paper, you can do so at the high school.
We will use the survey results to narrow the field to the top 3-5 ideas. From there, we will use sample artwork to give a visual of what a mascot could look like. This will not be final artwork and is subject to change. Those choices and art ideas will be voted on by all students K-12.
After the student vote, we will get official artwork ideas. If we need to do another round of voting based on the possible art ideas, we will do so.
Our plan is to have this process completed by the time we leave for Spring Break. We are truly shooting for Board approval of the name by the March board meeting.
Through this process, we will have consulted with the community multiple times, but will leave the final decision in the hands of the students. We firmly believe that this is about the students and want them to know that their voice matters in the process.
I invite you to please vote and share the link with others who may be interested in voting! I will add it to social media sites as well. If you are on social media, please spread the word! Additionally, please remain positive about this exciting opportunity to re-brand our schools!
If you have any questions, feel free to let me know.
Have a great week,
